10 Easy Matcha Recipes for Home: Lattes, Drinks and Desserts

The easiest matcha recipes to make at home are a hot matcha latte, an iced matcha latte and traditional matcha tea — each needs only matcha, water and (for lattes) milk, and takes under 5 minutes. Below are 10 recipes with exact quantities, from classic drinks to simple desserts.

Before you start

  • Measure: 1 level teaspoon of matcha is about 2 g. One bamboo scoop (chashaku) is about 1 g.
  • Water temperature: 75–80°C. Boiling water makes matcha bitter. Let boiled water rest for 2–3 minutes.
  • Sift first: sifting prevents lumps.
  • Whisk: a bamboo whisk gives the best foam; a milk frother or a jar with a lid also works.

Classic matcha drinks

1. Hot matcha latte

  • 2 g matcha (1 tsp)
  • 30 ml water at 75–80°C
  • 180 ml hot milk (dairy, oat or almond)
  • Honey or maple syrup to taste
  1. Sift matcha into a cup.
  2. Add the water and whisk until smooth and foamy.
  3. Pour in hot milk, sweeten if you like, and stir.

2. Iced matcha latte

  • 2 g matcha
  • 40 ml water at 75–80°C
  • 150 ml cold milk
  • Ice
  1. Whisk matcha with the water until smooth.
  2. Fill a glass with ice and milk.
  3. Pour the matcha over the top for the layered look, then stir.

3. Traditional matcha tea (usucha)

  • 1–2 g matcha
  • 60–70 ml water at 75–80°C
  1. Sift matcha into a wide bowl.
  2. Add water and whisk in a W motion for 15–20 seconds until frothy.
  3. Drink straight from the bowl.

Refreshing matcha drinks

4. Matcha banana smoothie

  • 2 g matcha
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 200 ml milk or yoghurt
  • A handful of ice

Blend everything until smooth. Add a spoon of oats or nut butter for a fuller breakfast.

5. Matcha lemonade

  • 2 g matcha
  • 30 ml warm water
  • 15 ml (1 tbsp) lemon juice
  • 1–2 tsp honey
  • 200 ml cold water and ice
  1. Whisk matcha with warm water.
  2. Stir honey into the lemon juice.
  3. Combine with cold water and ice, then pour the matcha on top.

6. Dirty matcha (matcha with espresso)

  • 2 g matcha
  • 30 ml warm water
  • 150 ml milk
  • 1 shot espresso (about 30 ml)

Make an iced or hot matcha latte, then pour the espresso on top. Stronger caffeine, so best before noon.

7. Strawberry matcha latte

Mash 3–4 strawberries with 1 tsp honey in a glass, add ice and 150 ml milk, then pour over 2 g matcha whisked with 40 ml water. Full recipe: strawberry matcha latte.

Easy matcha desserts

For baking, a good starting ratio is about 2 g (1 tsp) of matcha per 100 g of flour. Always sift it in with the dry ingredients.

8. Matcha pancakes

Whisk 2–3 tsp matcha into the dry mix for a batch made with about 150 g flour (roughly 8 pancakes). Cook on medium-low heat so the green colour stays bright.

9. Matcha white chocolate cookies

Matcha’s gentle bitterness balances sweet white chocolate. Full recipe: matcha white chocolate cookies.

10. Matcha overnight oats

  • 40 g rolled oats
  • 2 g matcha
  • 150 ml milk
  • 2 tbsp yoghurt and 1 tsp honey

Whisk matcha into the milk, stir in everything else, and refrigerate overnight. Top with fruit in the morning.

Tips for better matcha at home

  • Use ceremonial grade for drinks; it is smoother and less bitter.
  • Store matcha airtight in the fridge once opened.
  • Use within 6–12 months of opening for the best colour and taste.
